Do you think marriage is still needed in today's society? Why/why not?

I do feel marriage is still needed today. It gives people a sense of stability. It helps people survive and raise a family financially as well as giving the man and woman some sort of balance in give and take. Not to say the traditional ways of what a mans job and womans job is, in reference to contributing to the families needs has not changed however, the old fashioned basics I feel still stand today. Women with Children and men as the breadwiner, for the most part not always 100 percent like this always in todays society.

Do you see marriage in your future? Why/why not?

I do see marriage in my future...well that's part of the plan anyway. I always imagined one day getting married and starting a family. Having kids the whole 'fairytale life' that's told to little girls as they grow up. Obviously times have changed and divorce and step-children and all diff. types of happy families exist but I still want the picture perfect one although I am willing to accept it in another form as long as happiness is the overall end.

Can women achieve balance of being perceived as both powerful and feminine in today's society, or are those images mutually exclusive?

I believe women can be perceived as both powerful and feminine in todays society although it isn't very easy. I feel certain women are already doing so in our society. Two examples that come to mind are Michelle Obama, Beyonce, and Oprah all very powerful successful women who I feel are percieved by the public as very feminine women as well.

Who did we choose and why?

We chose Amy tan because she is slightly known and modern.

WMC 2010 Spring Break/ free choice

I thought I wasn't going away for spring break but then something came up . Winter Music conference 2010 in Miami. It was my first WMC and it was amazing. Hundreds of D.J. 's from all over the world go and it's non-stop parties. Pool parties during the day, Dj battles, Clubs at night as well as Hosted parties at just about every hotel in south beach and Miami Beah. It was an amazing 4 day weekend and the weather was nice too ;) which was the ultimate PLUS +* hope everyone else enjoyed gtheir spring breaks as much as me.. see you thrusday

◦Why do you think it's more socially acceptable for women to be homosexual than it is for men?

I feel this concept is more socially accepted because men in society are viewed to be the 'masculine, strong, breadwiner, macho' type and woman to be the 'feminine, pretty, child-raising, delicate' type. Therefore, men having any 'womanly' role is socially frowned upon. Homosexual men usually have some feminine qualities, hence them being attracted to the opposite (same) sex; the man. Heterosexual men like women. I feel they like women so much they find the idea of two women together sexy and erotic. I think the 'lipstick lesbians' are the most socially accepted homosexual couple. It has been considered "hot" for two feminine woman to be together in a sexual relationship and women seem to not find it as 'inappropriate' as if two men are together. Its like the opposite of a man being socially accepted to sleep around and get applauded for his status and a woman called a whore. Unfair, yes. The same in a way applies for the woman to be 'applauded' or accepted when engagng in a sexual act with another woman but two men is more socially frowned upon.

5.what is your worst habit?

my answers...

2.to be a super model

What positive images of female sexuality can you think of in popular media?

Women in todays popular medie who I personally feel display an image of positive sexually would have to be women like Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, and Beyonce. To name the first three that come to mind. They are all constantly subjected to paparazzi in there way and having their daily lives put on display. However, all three uphold a respectable way about themselves. At times they can dress 'sexy' and be very feminine but never cross the line to where they are overly exposing themselves. Beyonce especially whether in performances or videos has a very sexy demenour but always in a respectable womanlly fashion.

Did Irene push Clare

When I wrote my papaer on the passing I ended it with the contemplation of this particular question...I wasn't quite sure but after loookin over it again I believe she did. She was nervous to come down the stairs , wondering if she was...'dead' and she said something in reference to explaining it was an accident. So was it on purpose? Subconsciously maybe.. She was definetly emotionally unstable due to the affair and the stress of her one time friends life being exposed in the middle of a party she was holding. I am still unsure of her exact intentions at that moment.

Why do you think a sex-related scandal can "ruin" a woman today?

Unfortunately women and sex are not the same as men and sex. Women are supposed to be, according to society, more conservative when it comes to this matter. So a sex-related scandal first off will usually give the woman a negative reputation. Depending on the context of the scandal and how much is revealed about the woman in question and her sex life. Also how normal it is or how 'sleezy' she is being portrayed. If a woman in a high postion is exposed in a sex scandal her reputation automatically is depleted in a negative sense. She is viewed as being non-lady like , irresponsible, and sleezy. So quite frankly it could 'ruin' a woman because she could possibly loose her job as well as the respect of many people around her. Sad, but true. I guess the best way to avoid this is to keep your sex life private.

Sexuality has always been viewed by people in many different perspectives. Some consider it sacred, others an act of pleasure one should freely be able to decide when and how often and with whomever to share it with. From the beginnig of time it's always seemed to be 'a man's world.' Not to say women haven't come far but even today I feel it's a man's world. Things such as speaking properly dressing conservative and treating yourself with respect are examples of what women are supposed to do to uphold this feminine way. Men contradict themselves by wanting a respectable woman like that to say , marry, and then a whole other type of woman to have for their own 'pleasure'. Women have come a long way though, and I feel that when it comes to sexuality it is becoming more and more accepted for a woman to be able to express herself freely and have the same respect given to a man if he was to act the same way. People will always form opinions and judge but as time goes on, I feel women are getting closer to being viewed sexually in a similar aspect as men.

Class Sturggles Today

I definetly feel that class struggles are alive in todays world. Starting with something as simple as what town is someone living in. Is that an upper class town or a lower class area? It depends on the economic class of the poeple living in that certain town, again a class sturggle. People try to ultimately take care of themselves and their families and enjoy life and be happy. However, the amount of money you make puts you into a cetrain 'class' and the way you present youself represents your social class. Are you a well-educated striving individual, or a sloppy uneducated lazy person in which case you are pushed in to a 'lower class' of person. People judge people everyday by just about everything and 'class struggle' is very much alive in todays world.

womens role in todays culture

I feel the role of women in today's culture varys in different situations. We still don't make as much as a man even if doing the exact same job with the exact same qualifications. So in that sense we still have a ways to go to be treated as equals. I still feel women are pushed into the role of 'stay at home mom'. We are supposed to cook and clean and take of the children while then men go out and make the money and provide for the family. However, todays women are breaking through that stereotype and making more money at times than thier husbands. Men are known to now stay home and care for the children but I don't feel the roles will ever fully reverse. Women have come a long way.. and who knows maybe in the future we will all be "equals" but I still feel women have a ways to go

Introduction

Hi Everyone! My name is Victoria Sirianni, I am 23 years old and have been in Bergen on and off for the past 3years. I am very excited I will finally be graduating in the summer. My major right now is Liberal Arts (since I was undecided and it's easy to transfer with an A.A. in L.A.) I took this class to satisfy my degree, but after the first night I must say I am very happy with my choice.
I plan to transfer and major in Elementary Education. I love children and I if I can make an impact on 'Just One' child's life that would make it all worth it for me. I absolutely love helping people, so on the side I plan to pursue social work in some way shape or form. I am a very laid back and easy going person who rarely gets mad. I look at every situation and always find the positive in it even if it isn't benefitting me.
I am curious to see what we will be discussing in class as we move foward into the semester. I was never into history so 'women in literature' was never a class I would have thought I would enroll in. I am most excited to hear what we will learn about women and power. The two go together so nicely =) Everything else on the agenda seems interesting as well but that caught my eye the most. Wish everyone a successful semester. Prof. Matthews seems to have an attention grabbing way of teaching so I am confident I will enjoy the information that is going to be presented.
